Exhibition+Lives
Huang Shuqin’s exhibitions and live works move across the UK and China, unfolding through a practice that brings together installation, body theatre, live performance and spatial composition. Her projects have been presented in galleries, theatre settings, public programmes, festivals and artist-led contexts, reflecting a mode of working that is both interdisciplinary and highly responsive to site, atmosphere and audience. Rather than treating exhibition and live performance as separate categories, her practice often allows them to overlap: installations carry bodily and theatrical tension, while live works are shaped with a strong sense of material, image and spatial structure.
Across these contexts, her work remains rooted in recurring concerns with line, body, space, intimacy, feminine experience and the invisible emotional structures that shape social life. Whether presented as a live body performance, an installation environment, a collaborative stage-based work or a participatory workshop, each project develops through an attentive relationship between material and gesture. Woven forms, thread, soft structures and bodily actions are used not only as visual or sculptural elements, but also as ways of thinking through containment, vulnerability, resistance, care and transformation.
Her experience across both exhibition and live formats has enabled her work to adapt to a wide range of artistic contexts. It can operate within gallery-based presentations, performance programmes, interdisciplinary festivals and public-facing events, while maintaining a clear artistic language. This flexibility is one of the strengths of her practice: the ability to translate a consistent conceptual and bodily vocabulary into different formats without losing depth or coherence. Her works are visually distinctive, materially sensitive and performatively grounded, making them particularly suited to spaces that value experimentation, live encounter and cross-disciplinary exchange.
Working across the UK and China has also shaped her practice through multiple cultural and spatial conditions. These experiences have informed a way of making that is both context-aware and open to dialogue, allowing each project to respond to local environment, audience and institutional framework while remaining connected to a sustained artistic inquiry. Through this cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach, Huang Shuqin’s exhibitions and live works continue to develop as forms of embodied research — capable of moving between installation, performance, festival presentation and public engagement while offering a strong and recognisable artistic voice.
